There are a remarkable number of creative people in the Milford House community, guests, staff and management who care passionately about preserving and enhancing what is valued and memorable here. Out of that care and creative energy have come some programs and offerings that we are excited about, and that we believe are consistent with the shared vision of what is Milford House. The “new” programs and experiences we anticipate this season will be not a departure from those values and traditions, but rather an affirmation.
- In the second week of July (see the article and description elsewhere in this issue), Evelyn Dunphy of Maine and Nova Scotia will be leading a group of artists in a wildernesspainting workshop. Attendance is by invitation/reservation only, and there are still a couple of openings available, so please sign up if you're interested. There is also a planned nature photography workshop in late September/early October – details will be announced shortly.
- We have hired Ginny Crosby, a student at Acadia University who is certified in backwoods canoe tripping, wilderness safety and child safety. She will be managing our canoe and kayak livery program (including instruction), as well as managing our new bicycle rentals offering.
- Greg MacEwan, a Mi'kmaq Chief from Bear River, makes beautiful native baskets and tells traditional stories of the original people in the area. He will be making regular appearances at Milford House this season, demonstrating his craft, and telling his stories for kids of all ages (including me).
- You will find an expanded vegetable and flower garden, with the results being our own vegetables on the table – how fresh is that? – and flowers in cabins – how sweet is that?
- Our new chef, Bruce Campbell, who began as sous-chef last season, is working to expand our focus on locally produced foods and wines and creating menus that blend modern tastes and the time-honored Milford House tradition of old-fashioned home cooking.
- Tennis, anyone? How about horseshoes? There are new nets on the courts, badminton, new croquet equipment, a new horseshoe pit, volleyball – I'm tired just thinking about it.
- We've cut a new trail which runs along the Boot Lake shore, roughly from Geier cabin, and joins Pompy Trail near Little.
- We will be showing our completely redone and redecorated “model cabin” this summer – a collective effort centered on handmade rustic (and comfy) furniture made by local craftspeople, including artwork from local artists.
- Please see our redesigned website, and you'll be able to view it at real high speed even from Milford House; we finally have high-speed connectivity!
As I have been speaking with people both local and from afar, as I am introducing Milford House as a destination and unique place of relaxation and restoration, I discover that their excitement and mine is infectious. As I meet with staff and discuss plans for the coming season, their anticipation is palpable. We embrace and reaffirm the natural, simple enjoyment of the setting, the camaraderie of friends and staff, and the comfort of good food in good company. This place is about you, and your family, and the memories you're making at Milford House. Come and enjoy.
